Where it came from
Kobayashi ga Kawai Sugite Tsurai!!, often referred to as Kobakawa, originated as a shōjo manga series by Gō Ikeyamada, serialised in Sho-Comi starting in 2012. The two-episode OVA adaptation, released in 2013, was produced by studios Zexcs and Exa International. It serves as a visual companion to the manga, condensing the high-school romantic complications of the protagonist, Mitsuru Kobayashi, who swaps identities with her twin brother to attend a boys' school.
The project was designed to capitalize on the manga's massive popularity among young female readers in Japan. The character designs were adapted to translate Ikeyamada’s signature expressive art style into animation, focusing on the comedic and dramatic tropes common to the shōjo genre. While the OVA served as a promotional vehicle for the source material, it remains a notable example of early 2010s manga-to-OVA marketing strategies aimed at expanding the reach of successful teen-oriented print series.
