Kodomo Dake no Natsu

Kodomo Dake no Natsu, or 'A Summer Only for Children,' is a notable animated television special produced by NHK. Released in the early 1990s, the film reflects the broadcaster's long-standing tradition of producing poignant, socially conscious animated features intended for family audiences, often focusing on themes of childhood development and the nuances of growing up in post-war Japan.

The film is defined by the clean, expressive character designs and atmospheric background art typical of NHK productions from this era, which aimed to balance educational value with high-quality artistic storytelling. It was crafted during a period when Japanese public media was investing heavily in original anime features to address the emotional landscapes of young viewers, and it was received as a sensitive, meditative addition to the studio’s library of independent animated works.
