Kodanuki Ponpo

Kodanuki Ponpo originated as the protagonist of a Japanese puppet television series produced by NHK in the early 1970s. The character was designed to reflect the classic aesthetic of tanuki folklore, rendered with the whimsical charm characteristic of NHK’s children’s programming during that era. The series followed the adventures of a young, mischievous tanuki, utilizing traditional puppetry techniques to engage a young audience with stories rooted in Japanese cultural motifs.

The character design was created by the creative teams at NHK to be both endearing and accessible for television broadcast. It was received warmly by families in Japan, becoming a minor cultural touchstone that exemplified the network’s focus on wholesome, character-driven entertainment. The aesthetic choices prioritized rounded shapes and emotive features, which allowed the puppet to convey a wide range of expressions despite the limitations of its construction.
