Where it came from
The King of Fighters XV: Special Animated Short was released in 2022 to commemorate the launch of the latest installment in SNK’s long-running fighting game franchise. Produced by Studio G-1Neo, the short was designed to serve as a high-octane marketing piece that captured the frenetic energy and character-driven narratives central to the KOF series. It functions as a stylistic bridge between the game's intricate 3D models and the classic hand-drawn aesthetic that defined the franchise throughout the 1990s.
The animation reflects the creative direction of director Masami Obari, a legendary figure in the mecha and action anime genres known for his dynamic camera angles and intense combat sequences. By leveraging Obari's signature style, the short aimed to satisfy long-term fans by emphasizing fluid movement and iconic character interactions. Upon its release, it was warmly received within the fighting game community for its visual fidelity and its ability to effectively translate the game's roster into an engaging, short-form cinematic format.
