Where it came from
Koi Hanabi, or 'Carp Fireworks,' was produced by NHK as a demonstration of high-definition visual aesthetics. Created in the early 2000s, it served as a technical showcase for the broadcasting network's transition into high-definition digital television, utilizing the vivid, rhythmic movements of koi fish to highlight color accuracy, clarity, and the fluid motion capabilities of the new broadcast format.
The production sought to blend traditional Japanese imagery with cutting-edge visual technology. By focusing on the interplay of light reflecting off water and the intricate scales of the fish, the designers aimed to create an immersive, meditative experience that would demonstrate the capabilities of the hardware to viewers who were just beginning to adopt high-definition screens in their homes.
