Komi Can’t Communicate originated as a manga series by Tomohito Oda, serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday starting in 2016. The story centers on Shoko Komi, a high school student whose extreme social anxiety and communication difficulties are misunderstood by her peers as aloofness, leading her protagonist, Hitohito Tadano, to help her reach her goal of making one hundred friends. The 2021 anime adaptation is noted for its distinctive visual direction, characterized by experimental title cards and fluid character animation that emphasizes Komi's internal world.
