Where it came from
Komatta Jii-san, or The Troubled Old Man, emerged in 2020 as a series of short-form anime episodes produced by Kachidoki Studio. The series is based on a popular social media manga by Shinichi Sugita, which centered on the humorous and heartwarming daily life of a grandfather who finds himself in various surreal and challenging situations while maintaining an unflappable, gentle demeanor.
The animation style was designed to reflect the simple, charming aesthetic of the original webcomic, utilizing a limited animation technique that emphasizes character expressions and comedic timing. It was received as a lighthearted piece of comfort television, aimed at viewers looking for brief, whimsical vignettes that highlight the innocence and eccentricities of aging.
