Where it came from
Konnichiwa Anne: Before Green Gables was produced in 2009 by Nippon Animation as part of their long-running World Masterpiece Theater series. This series was created as a prequel to the 1979 adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, exploring the early, formative years of Anne Shirley before her arrival at the Cuthbert farm. The production aimed to provide context to the character's resilience by depicting the hardships she endured in orphanages and foster homes.
The series was directed by Katsuyoshi Yatabe, who sought to maintain the gentle, nostalgic visual aesthetic characteristic of the World Masterpiece Theater franchise. By adapting Budge Wilson’s 2008 authorized prequel novel, the production team focused on character-driven storytelling, emphasizing Anne’s vivid imagination as a coping mechanism for her difficult circumstances. It was received as a respectful, if melancholic, addition to the established lore of L.M. Montgomery’s beloved protagonist.
