Kotatsu Cat

Kotatsu Neko, or Kotatsu Cat, was released in 2005 as a short, experimental original net animation directed by the animator and director Ryuji Masuda. Created during a period when flash-based animation was gaining traction in Japan, the short was designed as a minimalist, whimsical exploration of domestic comfort centered on a cat resting under a kotatsu. Its aesthetic is defined by crude, intentionally simple line work and a dry, surreal sense of humor that reflects the idiosyncratic style Masuda developed during his work on various independent animation projects.

The piece emerged from the burgeoning subculture of Japanese internet animation, where short, quirky clips were shared across message boards and personal websites. By focusing on the mundane and cozy nature of the kotatsu, the film tapped into a specific sense of seasonal relaxation familiar to Japanese viewers. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of non-traditional animation for its low-fi charm and subversive brevity, eventually becoming a cult classic that exemplifies the DIY ethos of early-2000s web video production.
