Based on the adult game by C: drive.
When Mishiro was small, half of his soul was eaten by a toothed deity. Since then he has had to deal with spirits called kotowari that reside in the darkness of the souls of people who are related to him, no matter how distant. Kotowari are soul fragments created from a person’s suffering and they can normally only be seen, heard and touched by that individual. Even if the kotowari is destroyed, it will keep respawning unless the cause of the suffering is resolved. Shortly after transferring to a school in a history-laden sightseeing town, Mishiro encounters a kotowari and decides to search for its owner. However, there isn’t just one kotowari as many other girls harbour their own suffering.

Where it came from
Kotowari: Kimi no Kokoro no Koboreta Kakera was produced in 2013 by the independent animation studio Nihikime no Dozeu. As an original video animation, it represents a niche subset of Japanese indie animation that focuses on experimental storytelling and intimate, character-driven narratives rather than the broader tropes of mainstream television series. The project was conceived as a limited-run release, catering to a small but dedicated audience interested in the studio's stylistic approach to animation techniques and evocative atmosphere.
The creative direction of this work centers on minimalist aesthetics and a restrained color palette, intended to mirror the internal emotional states of the characters. By prioritizing mood and subtle visual cues over complex action, the studio aimed to evoke a sense of melancholy and introspection. While the OVA remained largely obscure to the international market, it is frequently cited by followers of independent Japanese animation for its unique visual identity and its commitment to a specific, unconventional artistic vision.
