Where it came from
Released by Gakken in 2000 as part of their educational anime series, this adaptation of Ryunosuke Akutagawa's 1918 short story, The Spider's Thread, was produced to introduce classic Japanese literature to younger audiences. The production leaned into the surreal and moralistic themes of the original text, utilizing a traditional aesthetic approach to emphasize the stark contrast between the depths of hell and the reaches of paradise.
The character design and visual direction were crafted to maintain fidelity to the melancholic atmosphere of Akutagawa's work, focusing on the solitary figure of Kandata. Upon its release, the OVA was primarily distributed through schools and libraries, garnering praise for its faithful narrative pacing and for effectively capturing the profound existential dread inherent in the source material.
