Where it came from
Kuramerukagari was produced by the studio Twin Engine and released in 2024 as part of a creative initiative to showcase original anime projects. The film was conceived within the context of revitalizing interest in small-town, nostalgic mystery storytelling, drawing on a specific aesthetic of industrial landscapes and subterranean exploration. It serves as a companion piece to the project Kurayukaba, collectively highlighting the work of independent-leaning creators under the Twin Engine production umbrella.
The film was directed by Shigeyoshi Tsukahara, an artist known for his distinct, atmospheric visual style that emphasizes intricate backgrounds and a sense of historical displacement. Tsukahara sought to blend elements of steampunk-inspired machinery with the mundane realities of a rural town, creating a world that feels both fantastical and rooted in tactile, lived-in environments. Upon its release, the film was noted for its unique visual language and its departure from typical seasonal anime tropes, gaining appreciation from audiences interested in auteur-driven animation.
