Kure-nai OVA

The Kure-nai OVA series, released in 2010, serves as an extension of the anime adaptation of Kentarō Katayama’s light novel series. Produced by studio Brain's Base, the project was developed following the conclusion of the 2008 television broadcast, allowing the creative team to explore side stories and character dynamics that did not fit within the original thirteen-episode television run. The production sought to maintain the visual aesthetic and moody, urban atmosphere established by director Kou Matsuo, focusing on the complex protective relationship between the protagonist, Shinkuro Kurenai, and the young Murasaki Kuhoin.

The design and direction of these episodes emphasize the series' blend of domestic comedy and high-stakes supernatural drama. By returning to the characters after the initial series, the animators refined the character designs to reflect a slightly more polished look, consistent with Brain's Base's output during that era. The OVA was received as a quiet, character-driven companion piece, appreciated by fans of the original light novels for its ability to flesh out the backstories of the supporting cast in a more relaxed, episodic format.
