Where it came from
Kyousougiga originated as a collaborative project between Toei Animation and Banpresto, released in 2011 as a promotional web series. The project was conceived by director Rie Matsumoto, who sought to blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with a frantic, postmodern narrative style. Its production was notable for its experimental visual flair and dense, metaphorical storytelling, which served as a pilot for the expanded television series that followed two years later.
The series is celebrated for its lush, surreal art direction, which draws heavily from the imagery of classic Japanese folklore and Buddhist iconography. Designed to explore themes of family and longing through the lens of a trapped reality, the project was well-received by critics for its ambitious scope and unique directorial vision, effectively establishing Matsumoto as a distinct voice in contemporary animation.
