Where it came from
Lady Blue was released in 1996 as a two-part original video animation (OVA) produced by Daiei, a Japanese film studio better known for its live-action kaiju franchises like Gamera. The production emerged during the height of the 1990s direct-to-video anime boom, a period defined by studios experimenting with darker, mature themes and distinct visual styles that bypassed the constraints of television broadcasting.
The animation leans into the gritty, noir-inspired aesthetic that was popular in contemporary cult anime titles. While the production is relatively obscure compared to the major hits of the decade, it is frequently cited by collectors for its atmospheric character designs and the quintessential 90s cel-shaded look. The project serves as a representative example of the niche, experimental storytelling that Daiei attempted to integrate into their animation catalogue during that era.
