Where it came from
Lady Lady!! was produced by Toei Animation in 1987, emerging during a period when the studio was heavily invested in shōjo anime adaptations of contemporary manga. The series is based on the manga by Yōko Hanabusa and centers on Lynn Russell, a young girl navigating life within an aristocratic British family, blending themes of class struggle, family dynamics, and romantic development. It was created to appeal to young audiences who enjoyed dramatic storytelling paired with refined character designs typical of the late 1980s aesthetic.
The character design for the anime adaptation was handled by Michi Himeno and Shingo Araki, a legendary duo known for their work on Saint Seiya and The Rose of Versailles. Their approach focused on delicate facial features and flowing hair to emphasize the emotional tone of the source material. While the series maintains a dedicated following among enthusiasts of 1980s retro anime, it remains a smaller entry in the Toei catalog compared to their blockbuster action-oriented franchises of the era.
