LAIDBACKERS

Laidbackers is a 2019 original anime film produced by Studio Gokumi, directed by Hiroyuki Hashimoto. The project was conceived as a lighthearted, comedic exploration of the 'isekai' genre, subverting standard tropes by depicting characters who are already heroes from a fantasy realm finding themselves reincarnated into the mundane, modern-day setting of Kyoto. The production was intended as an experimental, standalone feature that emphasizes character-driven humor over epic scale, reflecting Studio Gokumi's interest in character-focused storytelling.

The character designs for the film were crafted by Jiro Suzuki, who sought to blend traditional fantasy aesthetics with contemporary casual wear to highlight the cultural transition of the protagonists. Upon its release, the film was received as a niche, whimsical entry in the studio's catalog. Critics noted its modest scope and playful tone, viewing it as a gentle satire of the then-saturated fantasy revival market rather than a traditional high-stakes adventure.
