Lata Dawang Qiyu Ji

Lata Dawang Qiyu Ji, or The Adventures of Lada King, was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio during a period when the studio was experimenting with translating traditional Chinese storytelling into episodic television formats. The series reflects the studio’s signature use of distinct animation styles, blending early digital aesthetics with the character-driven narratives that defined the Shanghai school of animation. It was designed to cater to a growing demographic of young viewers in China, aiming to modernize folklore through approachable, episodic adventures.

The character design and visual direction were spearheaded by the studio's in-house creative team, who sought to balance cultural authenticity with the more fluid, vibrant movement required for television broadcast. While the series was developed to expand the studio's portfolio beyond feature-length films, it remains a notable example of the studio's pivot toward serialized storytelling. Upon its release, it was received as a charming addition to domestic children's programming, noted for its specific visual charm and contribution to the legacy of the Shanghai Animation Film Studio.
