Where it came from
Late night! The Genius Bakabon was produced in 2018 by Studio Signpost as a modern revival of Fujio Akatsuka’s classic gag manga, The Genius Bakabon. The series was developed to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Akatsuka's birth, aiming to introduce his surreal and anarchic brand of comedy to a contemporary audience while retaining the frantic, absurdist spirit of the original 1970s iterations.
The animation style and direction focused on high-energy, meta-humorous storytelling that frequently broke the fourth wall. By updating the setting to the modern era, the studio sought to highlight the timeless eccentricity of the Bakabon family. Upon its release, the series was noted for its experimental visual sequences and its commitment to the legacy of one of Japan’s most influential comedy franchises.
