Where it came from
Legend of Lyon Flare was produced by the studio AIC and released in 1986, emerging during the formative years of the original video animation market in Japan. As an early entry into the OVA format, the production was intended to capitalize on the growing domestic interest in direct-to-home video releases, which allowed studios to experiment with niche genres and creative freedom outside of the constraints of traditional television broadcasting.
The visual direction and character designs reflect the mid-1980s aesthetic prevalent in Japanese animation, characterized by a blend of fantasy elements and stylistic choices that were common for independent studio projects of that era. While the title remains a relatively obscure relic of early experimental animation, it stands as a testament to the period's rapid expansion of the medium and the industry's desire to push experimental storytelling through the burgeoning home media landscape.
