Where it came from
Legend of the Last Labyrinth was produced by J.C.Staff in 1997 as a direct-to-video original animation project. Emerging during a period when the studio was actively expanding its portfolio through experimental fantasy and adventure titles, the OVA sought to capitalize on the aesthetic trends of late-nineties Japanese animation, which emphasized intricate character designs and atmospheric world-building.
The production relied on the studio’s characteristic attention to cel-based animation detail, aiming to deliver a contained, high-concept narrative within a limited runtime. While it remains a niche entry in the studio's extensive filmography, it serves as a representative example of the mid-nineties OVA boom, a format that allowed directors to pursue creative risks outside the constraints of broadcast television series.
