Legend of the Millennium Dragon

Legend of the Millennium Dragon, released in 2011, was produced by Studio Pierrot to commemorate the studio's 30th anniversary. The film was directed by Hirotsugu Kawasaki and intended to serve as a high-fantasy epic that blended traditional Japanese folklore with contemporary digital animation techniques. It tells the story of a boy transported back in time to an ancient conflict involving dragons and elemental powers, positioning itself within the broader context of early 2010s anime feature films that sought to revitalize historical mythology for a younger audience.

The film's visual design was characterized by a heavy reliance on computer-generated imagery to render the dragons and action sequences, a stylistic choice that reflected the industry's shift toward hybrid 2D and 3D pipelines at the time. Upon its release, it received a mixed reception from critics and audiences, who praised the ambition of the technical production while noting that the narrative structure felt somewhat conventional. Despite its scale, the film remains a distinct entry in Studio Pierrot’s filmography, representing a specific period of experimentation for the studio.
