Where it came from
Leviathan: The Last Defense was produced by Studio GONZO and released as a television series in 2013. The project emerged from a collaboration with GREE, a major social gaming platform, as part of a trend of adapting mobile card-collection games into anime series. The story is set in a fantasy world where three young dragon riders are tasked with protecting their planet from various catastrophic threats, blending elements of magical girl tropes with tactical combat themes.
The character designs were overseen by artist Zenko Ueda, who sought to translate the aesthetic of the original digital card game into an animated format. While the show was designed to appeal to fans of the source material and the broader magical girl genre, it received a mixed critical reception. Reviewers often pointed to its reliance on established genre conventions and the inherent difficulties of adapting mobile game mechanics into a cohesive narrative structure, leading it to be viewed primarily as a niche title within GONZO's extensive animation catalog.
