Where it came from
Lily C.A.T. was released in 1987 as a science-fiction horror original video animation, produced by Studio Pierrot during the peak of the 1980s OVA boom in Japan. The project was conceived as a homage to the tension and claustrophobic isolation of Western space-horror cinema, most notably Ridley Scott's Alien, utilizing the direct-to-video market to experiment with darker, more mature narrative themes that were less common in televised anime at the time.
The production featured character designs by Yoshitaka Amano, whose distinct, ethereal aesthetic provided a stylistic contrast to the gritty, industrial setting of the starship Salty Dog. While the film is often remembered for its ambitious integration of biological horror and psychological thriller elements, it received a polarized critical reception upon release, with contemporary reviewers noting its strong atmosphere while finding the pacing and character motivations to be derivative of its clear cinematic inspirations.
