Where it came from
Lime-iro Senkitan: Nankoku Yume Roman was produced by studio KSS in 2004 as a sequel OVA to the Lime-iro Senkitan television series. The project served as a continuation of the franchise's historical-fantasy premise, which blends Meiji-era aesthetics with supernatural military action, set against the backdrop of the Russo-Japanese War. It reflects a period in mid-2000s anime production where experimental studio projects frequently transitioned from television runs to direct-to-video formats to further explore character narratives.
The series is noted for its distinctive visual style, characterized by a fusion of period-accurate uniforms and fantastical, steam-punk inspired combat sequences. The design team aimed to maintain the established tone of the original series while shifting the setting to more tropical environments for this installment. While the franchise garnered a niche following for its thematic ambition, its reception was generally centered on its stylistic choices and its contribution to the subgenre of period-set action anime, rather than mainstream critical appraisal.
