Where it came from
Dooly the Little Dinosaur originated as a South Korean manhwa series created by Kim Soo-jung, debuting in the magazine Treasure Island in 1983. The story follows a dinosaur who gains supernatural powers after being abducted by aliens and frozen in a glacier for millions of years, eventually thawing in modern-day Seoul to live with a grumpy resident named Go Gil-dong. The premise served as a whimsical vehicle for social satire, reflecting the rapid urbanization and cultural shifts of 1980s South Korea.
The 1987 animated television series adaptation brought Dooly to wider prominence, cementing the character as a cultural icon in Korea. Kim Soo-jung’s character design favored rounded, expressive features that bridged the gap between traditional comic book aesthetics and early television animation. The series was met with significant critical and popular acclaim, eventually spawning a diverse range of merchandise and a lasting legacy as a pioneering work in the nation's animation industry.
