Where it came from
Little Lord Fauntleroy was produced in 1988 by Nippon Animation as part of their long-running World Masterpiece Theater series. This anthology project was dedicated to adapting classic Western children's literature into high-quality anime for Japanese television. The series aimed to introduce international stories to domestic audiences, emphasizing emotional depth and period-accurate settings.
The production sought to capture the charm of Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1886 novel while adapting the narrative to fit a television format. Character designs were crafted to evoke a nostalgic, storybook aesthetic, focusing on the refined Victorian sensibilities of the source material. Upon its release, it was well-received for its gentle pacing and faithful translation of the book's themes of kindness and social class, solidifying its place as a recognizable entry in the World Masterpiece Theater canon.
