LOOK BACK

Look Back was released in 2024 as an animated film adaptation of the acclaimed 2021 one-shot manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Produced by Studio Durian and directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, the project emerged from a desire to faithfully capture the emotional resonance and raw artistic intensity of the original source material. Oshiyama focused on a minimalist yet expressive aesthetic, utilizing fluid character animation to emphasize the intimate bond and creative rivalry between the two protagonists, Fujino and Kyomoto.

The film was met with significant critical acclaim upon its release, particularly for its poignant exploration of the creative process and the inevitable grief that accompanies loss. Critics praised the animation for its grounded, human-centric approach, noting that it successfully translated Fujimoto’s distinctive storytelling style into a cinematic language. The project stands as a testament to the capabilities of a small, specialized studio, gaining recognition for its narrative depth rather than relying on large-scale spectacle.
