Love Hina: Motoko's Choice, Love or the Sword: Don't Cry

Love Hina: Motoko's Choice, Love or the Sword: Don't Cry was released in 2000 as a special episode, commonly referred to as an original video animation (OVA) or a bonus television special, following the conclusion of the main Love Hina series. The franchise, based on the manga by Ken Akamatsu, emerged during the height of the harem comedy genre’s popularity in the late 1990s. This specific entry was produced to provide additional character development for Motoko Aoyama, focusing on her internal conflict between her dedication to the sword and her burgeoning romantic feelings for the protagonist, Keitaro Urashima.

The production sought to balance the slapstick humor characteristic of the series with more intimate, character-driven moments. By centering on Motoko, the narrative departed slightly from the series’ typical focus on Naru Narusegawa, allowing the animation team to explore the stoic swordswoman's vulnerability. Upon its release, the special was well-received by fans of the source material who appreciated the departure from the standard harem formula, and it remains a notable example of the supplementary content that defined the franchise's expansive home media presence during the early 2000s.
