Loving Angel Angelique: When Hearts Awaken

Loving Angel Angelique: When Hearts Awaken was produced by Lantis and aired in 2006 as the first season of the anime adaptation based on the Angelique video game series by Koei. The franchise is historically significant for being the world's first otome game, a genre specifically designed to appeal to female players by focusing on romantic narratives and character interactions. This television adaptation sought to capture the high-fantasy aesthetic and emotional stakes of the original source material, translating its simulation-based gameplay into a linear, character-driven story for a broader television audience.

The production leans into a soft, ethereal aesthetic consistent with the shoujo anime trends of the mid-2000s, emphasizing lush character designs and a focus on the protagonist's personal growth amidst celestial intrigue. The series was created to expand the reach of the Angelique brand, which had already established a dedicated following through its successful run of games and drama CDs. While it was met with a warm reception from the existing fanbase who appreciated seeing the familiar cast of the 'guardians' brought to life, it functioned primarily as a foundational entry point for those newly discovering the expansive lore of the series.
