Where it came from
Lunatan: 10,000-nen no Himitsu was released in 2017 as a short-form original net animation produced by Studio Signal.MD. The project was conceived as a promotional collaboration between the studio and the city of Matsuyama, aimed at highlighting the local culture and historical sites of the region to a younger, digitally-native audience.
The production sought to blend a lighthearted, fantasy-driven narrative with the aesthetic charm of Matsuyama’s landscapes. While the project remained a niche experimental release within the studio’s portfolio, it reflected the growing trend of Japanese municipalities partnering with animation houses to create short-form content designed to stimulate tourism and local engagement.
