Lunatic Night

Lunatic Night was released in 1996 as a two-part original video animation, or OVA, distributed in North America by Central Park Media. Coming from the peak era of 1990s direct-to-video anime, it reflects the dark, supernatural, and often visceral aesthetic that found a dedicated niche audience in Western markets during the mid-to-late nineties. It fits into the broader catalogue of the era's independent distributors who focused on bringing edgier, adult-oriented content to VHS and early DVD formats.

The production leans into the common horror tropes of 1990s Japanese animation, characterized by moody lighting and high-contrast character designs intended to emphasize the supernatural themes of the narrative. As an independent release from a smaller distributor, it was designed for the burgeoning fan-collecting scene of the time. While it did not achieve mainstream critical acclaim, it remains a notable example of the low-budget, atmospheric genre fare that defined the niche market for imported anime during the pre-digital era.
