Master criminal Lupin the 3rd is at it again! An elusive meteoric gemstone called the “Trick Diamond” was once hidden inside Spain’s Sagrada Familia cathedral. In pursuit of the diamond, Lupin receives a message from his recently-deceased rival thief, Mark Williams. Mark’s challenge: return the treasures!
Five treasures—all stolen by Mark in his heyday—must be returned to their original homes within seven days, or Lupin will never find the diamond’s hiding place. And Lupin is never one to waste a diamond! But scoring the Trick Diamond only gets trickier as Mark’s lovely assistant Fujiko is keeping more than one closely-guarded secret, and Mafia boss Ivan “Rats” Crockovich is trying to both obliterate the Lupin Gang and swipe the diamond for himself!

Where it came from
Lupin the 3rd: Operation Return the Treasure was produced in 2003 as a television special, a staple format for the franchise since the late 1970s. Released during a period when TMS Entertainment was heavily focused on expanding the brand through annual high-concept heist stories, the production was designed to capitalize on the enduring popularity of Monkey Punch's iconic master thief. It follows the established formula of a globe-trotting adventure, centered on Lupin attempting to steal a high-value object while navigating complex traps and rivalries.
The character design and visual direction for this era of Lupin specials generally sought to balance the gritty, manga-inspired aesthetic of early series with the more streamlined, character-driven animation style that TMS refined during the late 1990s and early 2000s. By this time, the franchise had achieved cultural institution status in Japan. These specials were intended as standalone experiences for a broad audience, prioritizing witty dialogue and elaborate caper set-pieces over complex narrative continuity, which contributed to their reliable reception as lighthearted, reliable entertainment for long-time followers.
