Where it came from
Lupin the 3rd: Italian Game is a 2016 television special produced by TMS Entertainment, serving as a companion piece to the 2015 Part 4 television series set in Italy and San Marino. Directed by Kazuhide Tomonaga and Yuichiro Yano, the special was designed to bridge the narrative gaps within the season while leaning into the vibrant, breezy aesthetic that defined the series' modern revival. It focuses on Lupin’s past with the character Rebecca Rossellini, maintaining the franchise's tradition of blending globe-trotting capers with a lighthearted, sophisticated tone.
The production sought to emphasize the continuity of the series' visual style, which emphasizes sharp lines and fluid animation to evoke the spirit of Monkey Punch's original manga. Upon its release, the special was received as a welcomed addition for fans of the Part 4 iteration, praised for its chemistry between the lead characters and its commitment to the classic heist-adventure tropes that have kept the Lupin franchise relevant for decades. It stands as a reflective look at the modern era of the thief’s long-standing cinematic history.
