LUPIN THE THIIIRRRD

Lupin the Third: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, released in 2012, was commissioned to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the original manga series by Monkey Punch. Produced by TMS Entertainment and directed by Sayo Yamamoto, the project represented a significant departure from the franchise's traditional lighthearted caper tone. The creative team aimed to explore the darker, more psychological origins of the characters, grounding the narrative in a gritty, pulp-inspired aesthetic that contrasted sharply with the series' long-standing comedic conventions.

The visual design, overseen by Takeshi Koike, utilized a raw, sketchy animation style that emphasized fluid movement and an evocative, noir-inspired color palette. While the production risked alienating longtime fans accustomed to the series' more conventional action-adventure format, it was critically lauded for its bold artistic direction and complex character studies. The series is widely regarded as a watershed moment for the franchise, successfully demonstrating that the iconic cast could be reimagined through a more mature, experimental lens without losing their core identities.
