Where it came from
Lupin ZERO was released in 2022 as a six-episode original net animation produced by Telecom Animation Film. Designed to serve as a prequel, the series reimagines the early days of Arsène Lupin III, moving the setting back to the 1960s to mirror the era of Monkey Punch's original manga. The project was conceived to explore the character's formative years in Tokyo, emphasizing his development before he became the world's most recognizable gentleman thief.
The production sought to capture the stylistic flair of the 1960s with a sharp, retro aesthetic that pays homage to the classic Lupin III animation style. Director Daisuke Sako aimed to ground the character in a more youthful, ambitious context, contrasting his early apprenticeship with the suave master thief he is known to be in later incarnations. It was generally received as a stylistic success, praised for its meticulous period details and its ability to modernize the franchise's foundations while retaining the spirit of the original source material.
