Where it came from
Macross Frontier: Labyrinth of Time was produced by studio Satelight as a short film celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Macross franchise. Released in 2021 as a double feature alongside Macross Delta: Absolute Live!!!!!!, the film serves as a heartfelt epilogue to the 2008 television series Macross Frontier, providing fans with a long-awaited continuation of the narrative involving protagonists Alto Saotome, Ranka Lee, and Sheryl Nome.
The film was directed by Shoji Kawamori, the visionary creator of the Macross series, who sought to blend classic hand-drawn animation techniques with modern digital aesthetics. By focusing on the interplay of music and interstellar conflict, the production aimed to capture the nostalgic essence of the original series while utilizing contemporary visual storytelling to expand upon the emotional arcs of its central characters. The short was met with appreciation from the dedicated fanbase for its focus on character resolution and musical performances.
