Madogiwa no Totto-chan

Madogiwa no Totto-chan, released in 2023, is an animated feature film adaptation of Tetsuko Kuroyanagi’s 1981 autobiographical memoir of the same name. Directed by Shinnosuke Yakuwa and produced by Shin-Ei Animation, the project was years in development as Kuroyanagi had long resisted adaptation requests, fearing the film would fail to capture the nuance of her experiences at Tomoe Gakuen. The film follows the author's early childhood years at a unique school where the unconventional principal, Sosaku Kobayashi, fostered creativity and independence, offering a poignant look at the pre-war Japanese education system.

The film's visual design aimed to honor the iconic illustrations by Chihiro Iwasaki, which have defined the book's aesthetic since its original publication. The production team utilized a delicate, watercolor-inspired animation style to evoke the nostalgic and gentle tone of the source material. Upon its release, the film was well received by critics and audiences in Japan for its faithful adaptation and emotional resonance, serving as both a tribute to the legacy of the original memoir and a standalone work that explores themes of inclusion and childhood innocence.
