Where it came from
Madou King Granzort: Bouken-hen was released in 1992 as an original video animation that serves as a supplemental entry to the original anime series. Produced by UYoung, this installment was created to expand upon the fantasy-adventure themes established in the 1989 television run, which was directed by Seiji Okuda and conceptualized by the creative collective Yatate-Kikuchi. The series is noted for its unique blend of mecha action and magical girl-inspired transformation sequences, which stood out within the late eighties and early nineties mecha genre.
The character and mecha designs, famously overseen by Hideaki Anno and Hiroyuki Yamaga during the TV series development, maintained a distinct aesthetic that prioritized rounded, whimsical silhouettes over the gritty realism found in other robot anime of the era. The 1992 OVA release aimed to recapture the charm of the original protagonists, Daichi, Gus, and Rabi, while continuing the saga's lighthearted narrative. It was received primarily by the dedicated fanbase as a nostalgic coda that allowed viewers to revisit the colorful world of the Madou Kings.
