Where it came from
Maebashi Witches: Majo Minarai no Emoemories was produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks as part of the studio's continued expansion into multimedia witch-themed franchises. Released in 2026, the film serves as a narrative continuation of the Maebashi Witches universe, focusing on the transitional lives of apprentice witches navigating modern societal pressures. The production was intended to blend traditional magical girl tropes with a more grounded, emotional character study, reflecting a shift toward contemporary psychological themes in the genre.
The film's visual design emphasizes a distinct aesthetic contrast between its whimsical magical sequences and the stark, realistic depictions of the city of Maebashi. Directed and illustrated by a collaborative team within the studio, the art direction sought to evoke a sense of nostalgic melancholy. Upon release, the film was noted by critics for its ambitious departure from standard episodic formulas, receiving measured praise for its technical animation quality and its commitment to exploring the internal dilemmas of its young protagonists.
