Where it came from
Magical Circle Guru-Guru, released in 2017, serves as the third television anime adaptation of Hiroyuki Eto’s influential manga series. Produced by Production I.G, this version was created to celebrate the original work's 25th anniversary. It maintains the series' characteristic parody of traditional role-playing game tropes, blending whimsical humor with a distinct, colorful art style that serves as a modern homage to the aesthetic of early 1990s fantasy adventure games.
The 2017 series was designed to condense the massive narrative scope of the manga into a faster-paced, twenty-four-episode run. By focusing on the absurd rapport between the young hero Nike and the last Guru-Guru magic user, Kukuri, the production team sought to introduce the franchise to a new generation while honoring the nostalgic tone of the original publication. It was received favorably for its self-aware satire and the technical precision of its animation, which successfully modernized the quirky visual gags that defined the source material.
