Kozuki Mai is an elementary student who wants to be a magician and perform in her family's "Magicarat" magical act. However, she is too young, and her magic skills are not very good. Then one day, she encounters a ball of light that was put into a stuffed doll of flying squirrel, bringing it to life and somehow giving her the power to turn in to the 18 year-old magician "Magical Emi." As Emi, Mai was able to join the magic act. But she must keep her identity a secret from her family and from her crush.

Where it came from
Magical Emi, the Magic Star was produced by Studio Pierrot and aired between 1985 and 1986 as the third entry in their popular Magical Girl series. Following the success of Creamy Mami and Persian, the series was designed to explore the intersection of childhood dreams and performance art. Unlike its predecessors, the show centered on the world of professional stage magic, providing a grounded, albeit whimsical, backdrop for its protagonist’s transformation.
The character designs were created by Yoshiyuki Kishi, who sought to capture a more grounded aesthetic that reflected the protagonist Mai Kazuki’s aspirations as an amateur magician. The series was well-received by audiences for its character development and emotional depth, successfully distancing itself from the idol-focused themes of the studio’s earlier works. It remains a hallmark of 1980s animation, noted for its blend of traditional magical girl tropes and character-driven storytelling.
