A social game called The Magical Girl Raising Project allows one in tens of thousands of people to be a "magical girl" — possessing extraordinary physical capabilities and looks, as well as special magical powers that set them apart from the rest of the human race. But one day, in a district containing 16 magical girls, the administration announces that it must halve the number of magical girls to solve the problem of magical energy.

Where it came from
Magical Girl Raising Project originated as a light novel series written by Asari Endō and illustrated by Maruino, first published in 2012. It emerged during a period of subversion within the magical girl genre, intentionally contrasting the traditional tropes of hope and friendship with a grim, high-stakes battle royale setting. The story follows sixteen girls who are granted magical abilities, only to be thrust into a lethal competition overseen by a manipulative mascot character.
The 2016 television anime adaptation was produced by studio Lerche and directed by Hiroyuki Hashimoto. The series is noted for its stark juxtaposition of colorful, hyper-stylized character designs against brutal, violent narrative shifts. While it drew attention for its departure from the tone of classic genre staples, it is frequently discussed by fans of the dark fantasy and psychological thriller anime subgenres for its uncompromising exploration of desperation and character mortality.
