Asagiri Aya is a young girl who has fallen victim to bullies at her school. Looking for a way to escape her troubles, she looks to the internet for distraction, when a mysterious website called "Magical Girl Site" appears. Simply viewing the page is all it takes to hurtle Aya headlong into the deadly world of the Magical Girl Apocalypse. There, it’s fight or die, against a seemingly endless array of savagely adorable, frilly-skirted killing machines, each armed with magical powers and an unquenchable thirst for blood and chaos.

Where it came from
Magical Girl Site was produced by production doA and aired in 2018 as an adaptation of the dark fantasy manga series by Kentaro Sato. The series serves as a spin-off of his previous work, Magical Girl Apocalypse, and is known for its grim, transgressive take on the magical girl genre. By leaning into themes of bullying, trauma, and psychological distress, the show subverts the traditional tropes of hope and friendship typically associated with the genre.
The character designs and visual direction were aimed at maintaining the stark, unsettling aesthetic of Sato's original manga. The production sought to emphasize the visceral contrast between the characters' cutesy transformation costumes and the horrific, often violent circumstances they face. While the series garnered attention for its unconventional tone and stark storytelling, it also sparked critical discussion regarding its heavy reliance on trauma-based plot devices to drive its narrative progression.
