In this brand-new spinoff of the runaway hit series, Iruma is a dirt-poor but kind young boy who grows up in a ruthless city slum. One day, Iruma gives a severely injured old man his last loaf of bread and nurses the stranger back to health—only to find out that the elder gent is none other than Don Sullivan, leader of the Babel Mafia! Soon after, Don Sullivan comes back, whisks Iruma away, and begs the boy to become his grandson. And just like that, the curtains rise on Iruma’s chaotic new life as the next in line to a gigantic gang of—dare we saydemonic mafiosos!

Where it came from
Mairimashita! Iruma-kun: If Episode of Mafia is a 2027 television spin-off series produced by NHK, derived from the popular fantasy-comedy manga series by Osamu Nishi. The production adapts the fan-favorite 'Mafia' alternate universe concept, which originally appeared as a series of supplemental illustrations and bonus chapters within the primary manga volumes. This iteration reimagines the core cast in a stylized, prohibition-era underworld setting, shifting the tone from high-school adventure to a noir-inspired aesthetic while retaining the series' characteristic focus on loyalty and found family.
The character designs were overseen by the animation team at NHK, who aimed to preserve the expressive nature of Nishi's original art while integrating the sharp, moody silhouettes typical of the mafia genre. The series was developed to satisfy long-standing audience interest in the 'If' stories that explore alternative timelines for the protagonist, Iruma Suzuki. Upon its release, it was received as a stylish stylistic experiment that successfully translated the lighthearted charm of the original franchise into a more mature, atmospheric visual language.
