Maison Ikkoku: Bangai-hen Ikkoku-tou Nanpa Shimatsu ki

Released in 1991, Maison Ikkoku: Bangai-hen Ikkoku-tou Nanpa Shimatsu ki serves as a specialized extra installment to the seminal romantic comedy franchise created by Rumiko Takahashi. Produced by Kitty Film, this OVA was created to satisfy the lingering demand from fans following the conclusion of the long-running television series and the primary film adaptations. It functions as a playful, self-contained side story that leans into the comedic tropes and the established interpersonal dynamics of the residents of Ikkoku-kan boarding house.

The production design reflects the soft, late-eighties aesthetic that defined the transition into the early nineties anime style, maintaining continuity with the character designs established in the series. As a side story, or bangai-hen, the project was intended to provide a lighthearted diversion rather than further the main narrative arc. It was received by the audience as a nostalgic comfort piece, valued by collectors as a rare epilogue that allowed viewers to spend a final moment with characters who had become staples of the genre.
