Manga Nippon Mukashibanashi: Horafuki Tengu/Okesa Neko

Manga Nippon Mukashibanashi: Horafuki Tengu/Okesa Neko was released in 1982 as part of the cinematic expansion of the beloved Japanese anthology television series. Produced by Group TAC, the film was designed to preserve and revitalize traditional Japanese folklore for a younger generation, utilizing a distinct, painterly animation style that mirrored the warmth of illustrated storybooks. This approach was intended to evoke a sense of cultural continuity, moving away from the high-octane action typical of contemporary anime toward a more contemplative and pedagogical storytelling mode.

The production drew upon the creative vision of the long-running series' staff, who aimed to maintain the folk-art aesthetic that made the original television program a cultural staple. By adapting popular regional tales like those of the boastful Tengu and the enigmatic Okesa cat, the film sought to frame folklore as an accessible, communal experience. Upon its release, it was received as a gentle, nostalgic contribution to Japanese children's media, solidifying the series' reputation as a reliable guardian of folklore and traditional oral history.
