Manie Manie: Neo Tokyo

Manie Manie: Neo Tokyo, released in 1987, emerged as an ambitious anthology film produced by the animation studio Madhouse. It was conceived as a showcase for the burgeoning talent of the Japanese animation industry during the mid-eighties, drawing inspiration from the experimental spirit that defined the era. The project brought together a collection of visionary directors and animators who were tasked with exploring surrealist and science-fiction themes through distinct, non-linear narratives.

The film is perhaps best known for its three segments: Labyrinth Labyrinthos, The Running Man, and Construction Cancellation Order. Rintaro, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, and Katsuhiro Otomo each directed a segment, utilizing the project to push the boundaries of cel animation and atmospheric storytelling. Upon its release, the film was received as a technically sophisticated piece of avant-garde cinema that solidified the reputations of its creators, particularly Otomo and Kawajiri, as leading figures who would go on to shape the global aesthetic of anime.
