Also known as Manual of Ninja Martial Arts, the only animation from Japanese New Wave maestro Nagisa Oshima is as provocative as one would expect from such a remarkable filmmaker. The film follows Sanpei Shirato's classic comic story about the son of an assassinated feudal lord in the Muromachi period, who attempts to avenge his father's death and meets Kagemaru, a renegade ninja helping peasants and farmers rebel against Oda Nobunaga's regime.

Where it came from
The Manual of Ninja Martial Arts, released in 1967, emerged during a period of rising international fascination with East Asian martial arts cinema. This production served as one of the early attempts to codify and present the elusive techniques of ninjutsu to a global audience, bridging the gap between historical martial traditions and the dramatic requirements of the silver screen.
The instructional approach within the film reflects the mid-century stylistic focus on practical demonstration mixed with cinematic flair. While the specific choreography and instructional direction were tailored for entertainment, the film remains a notable artifact of 1960s exploitation and action cinema, documenting the evolving Western perception of Japanese martial disciplines before the broader martial arts boom of the 1970s.
