Where it came from
The Manyu Scroll, known in Japan as Manyuu Hiken-chou, was produced by Hoods Entertainment and aired in 2011. The series is rooted in the jidaigeki historical drama genre, specifically subverting tropes through a premise involving a clandestine scroll that dictates the hierarchy of society based on physical attributes. It emerged during a period of prolific adaptation of light novels and manga into short-run television anime, reflecting the studio's focus on experimental niche content during the early 2010s.
The series design is characteristic of director Toshifumi Kawase's approach to blending action-oriented choreography with exaggerated character aesthetics. The production was intended as a satirical take on period dramas, utilizing a vibrant color palette and stylized animation sequences. Upon its release, it was noted primarily for its controversial premise and its adherence to the fanservice-heavy trends prevalent in the late-night broadcast anime block of that era, receiving a polarized reception from both critics and the international audience.
